I believe good health is the most important thing in life - because it gives you freedom. Freedom to pursue your dreams and do all the things that poor health won't permit. What constitutes a healthy diet?

Unfortunately, there are more opinions about this than there are health experts. To further complicate the matter, dietary concepts change over time, leaving most people confused and uncertain about what or whom to trust. Along with personal experimentation, such approach will enable you to establish proper eating habits that work especially well for your body. This takes time and energy, but considering the long lasting benefits a healthy diet can provide, the effort is more then well worth it. For 99.9% of human existence, our species lived on foods that were either raw or minimally processed. The technology needed to increase food processing did not exist until very recently. It is therefore reasonable to assume that our bodies are best adapted at utilizing and dealing with the raw or minimally processed foods which sustained us, and our predecessors, for millions of years: fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts and seeds. A good diet is based on natural, whole or minimally processed foods.

A large portion of it should consist of foods that can be eaten raw, such as fruits and vegetables. Fermented or cultured, unpasteurized foods such as kefir, yogurt, cheeses, miso, sauerkraut and pickles are considered highly beneficial in many cultures. Cooking should be minimal and only applied to foods that must be cooked in order to be edible. Ancestral heritage also plays an important role as certain foods may need to be excluded or emphasized. Maintaining healthy routined diet can make enormous improvements to ones health, it's only one essential part of healthy living. The other parts are proper and adeqaute physical activity, mental and spiritual well being, and adequate rest. All need to be addressed in order to achieve better health. An important thing I learned while experimenting with diets and other health related approaches is to always pay attention to the signals from the body. It's essential to do this - in order to maintain good health - and adjust accordingly. As one gets better at reading the body, it becomes natural to self diagnose a lot of minor problems (which can become major if not paid attention to) and remedy them by simply adjusting the diet or other aspects of life. Finally, we are all different - what works for one person may not work for another - thus it's important to learn about and experiment with nutrition to find out what works and what does not.

Apples Are Good Sources Of Antioxidants

Fruits and vegetables form an important part of a healthy diet. If you consume 2-3 servings of each daily, you will be well-protected against cardiovascular diseases, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and some types of cancer.

That's because fruits and vegetables contain polyphenols which protect our normal cells from free radical damage, thereby boost up our immune systems.

Dieticians strongly recommend apples as part of our diet due to their plentiful source of polyphenols.

Snack on an apple which is delicious, satisfying, juicy and easy to carry. It is also relatively low in calories, contains no fat, cholesterol or sodium, so it is an excellent fruit to maintain healthy weight and heart.

Apples are also high in fructose, a simple sugar which is sweeter than sucrose (main component of cane sugar). As Fructose metabolized slower, it helps to control blood sugar levels, therefore is suitable for diabetes patients.

An effective way to cure constipation is to eat ripe, uncooked apples since they contain a lot of soluble and insoluble fiber. They can also be stewed which are effective treatment for diarrhoea and gastroenteritis.

Dried apples are eaten as a snack. Apple slices are exposed to the fumes of burning sulphur to prevent them from browning, then dried in the sun on wire trays.

As moisture is lost, natural sugars become concentrated, which is why athletes value dried apples as a source of carbohydrate that is quickly converted to energy. Dried apples contain six times more calories than fresh ones. They are high in fibre and moderate source of iron. But lost their vitamin C during drying process.

Putting apples with other fruits eg apricots together in a paper bag for two to four days will help other fruits ripen faster. For the same reason, avoid storing apples with strong-smelling foods to prevent them from absorbing unpleasant odors.

When the fruit is again exposed to normal temperatures and oxygen levels � on the supermarket shelves, it continues to mature and may quickly go soft.

To avoid cut apples from browning, dip them in a mixture of one part lemon juice to three parts water - or Vitamin C-fortified 100% apple juice.

Should we peel the apple? No, as two-thirds of the fiber, and many of the antioxidants, are found in an apple's peel. However, some raise concerns about the amount of pesticides on the peel. so we should run the apples under the tap more thoroughly if we decide to eat the peel.

Is apple juice as good? It is best to eat apples rather than drink apple juices as blending may cause important nutrients like polyphenols and fiber to disappear. But if you really wants to drink apple juice, opt for the cloudy rather than clear apple juice to get more polyphenols and pectins.

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon butter, 4 firm, tart apples, peeled, cored and sliced, a pinch of ground cinnamon (optional)

Cooking Instructions:
1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
2. Add the sliced apples and the cinnamon.
3. Cook till the apples turn soft.
4. Serve with pancakes
